Going Down Home with Daddy

  • Title: Going Down Home With Daddy
  • Author: Kelly Starling Lyons
  • Illustrator: Daniel Minter
  • Publisher: Peachtree Publishing Company
  • Publication year: 2019
  • Brief Summary: From Amazon-“Set at one young boy’s annual family reunion, this Caldecott Honor-winning picture book by Kelly Starling Lyons and Daniel Minter is a rich and moving celebration of Black history, culture, and the power of family traditions.”
  • Ideas for using this book in classroom or library – I don’t know that this could be used for any particular curriculum but I think this book is a great example of everyday African American life and celebrating family. I think this could resonate with children of all backgrounds as many children experience visiting their grandparents and learning about their family histories.
  • Whatever additional notes you’d like to add about this book and why you liked or didn’t like it – I think Minter’s illustrations are so vibrant. They are full of patterns, and colors. My favorite illustration is at the end where their Granny is feeding her chickens, all multi-colored, with a tree symbolically growing through her gown.
