• Title: Once Upon a World: Rapunzel
  • Author: Chloe Perkins
  • Illustrator: Archana Sreenivasan
  • Publisher: Little Simon, an imprint of Simon & Schuster
  • Publication year: 2017
  • Brief Summary: From Simon & Schuster-“The classic story of Rapunzel gets a fresh twist in this vibrant Indian spin on the beloved fairy tale!”
  • Ideas for using this book in classroom or library –I think for an elementary school library this could be a great book to use for young children as they are learning about the traditional fairy tales. While the story here does not deviate from the original, I think the diverse characters would give young children a different perspective from the original fairy tale.
  • Whatever additional notes you’d like to add about this book and why you liked or didn’t like it –I love the illustrations by Sreenivasan. They are bright, colorful and feature our “Rapunzel” in a beautiful sari. However, as this Kirkus Review points out (and that I did not know until I picked this up from my local library during curbside pickup) this was published in board book format which I think is a shame. I think this book could be used for older children as well, and it would benefit in a bigger, paperback or hardback format. I would really love to include this on my list simply based on Sreenivasan’s stunning illustrations but hesitate because of the format this book was published in.
