Last Stop on Market Street

  • Title: Last Stop on Market Street
  • Author: Matt de la Pena
  • Illustrator: Christian Robinson
  • Publisher: G.P. Putnam’s Sons, an imprint of Penguin Group USA
  • Publication year: 2015
  • Brief Summary: From Penguin Random House-“Every Sunday after church, CJ and his grandma ride the bus across town. But today, CJ wonders why they don’t own a car like his friend Colby. Why doesn’t he have an iPod like the boys on the bus? How come they always have to get off in the dirty part of town? Each question is met with an encouraging answer from grandma, who helps him see the beauty—and fun—in their routine and the world around them.”
  • Ideas for using this book in classroom or library –This blog, Carol Hurst’s Children Literature Site, recommends using this book for language arts, reading comprehension, social skills and art appreciation.
  • Whatever additional notes you’d like to add about this book and why you liked or didn’t like it –Robinson’s art really lends to our protagonist CJ’s voice. I think one of my favorite scenes in this book is the two-page page where CJ and his grandmother walks through the city, and CJ begins to notice the beautiful in the everyday that he hadn’t noticed before, like the rainbow behind the buildings.
