Title: Tar Beach
Author: Faith Ringgold
Illustrator: Faith Ringgold
Publisher: Scholastic Inc.
Publication year: 1991
Brief Summary: From Scholastic Inc.-“A young girl flies above her apartment building rooftop, which is her “tar beach,” and looks down on her neighborhood.”
Ideas for using this book in classroom or library – Here is another book, much like Harlem, and Uptown, is a distinct look into the African American neighborhood of Harlem. One activity around this book that I found on International Literacy Association was to have students make their own “quilt” and include their answers to the question of what freedoms do you enjoy?
Whatever additional notes you’d like to add about this book and why you liked or didn’t like it – I found the summary at the end of the book about how Ringgold created her illustrations from her quilt series, extremely interesting. It revealed a lot about the book that I wouldn’t have necessarily picked up, like the unions not letting African American and Native Americans in.
