Tar Beach

  • Title: Tar Beach
  • Author: Faith Ringgold
  • Illustrator: Faith Ringgold
  • Publisher: Scholastic Inc.
  • Publication year: 1991
  • Brief Summary: From Scholastic Inc.-“A young girl flies above her apartment building rooftop, which is her “tar beach,” and looks down on her neighborhood.”
  • Ideas for using this book in classroom or library – Here is another book, much like Harlem, and Uptown, is a distinct look into the African American neighborhood of Harlem. One activity around this book that I found on International Literacy Association was to have students make their own “quilt” and include their answers to the question of what freedoms do you enjoy?
  • Whatever additional notes you’d like to add about this book and why you liked or didn’t like it – I found the summary at the end of the book about how Ringgold created her illustrations from her quilt series, extremely interesting. It revealed a lot about the book that I wouldn’t have necessarily picked up, like the unions not letting African American and Native Americans in.
